  • Great to see a film about dancing! A relatively unexplored sub-genre of documentary, and Cunningham was welcome for this alone. It adds to a hole that I suppose Wenders' Pina opened.

 

  • On that note, this film should not have been shot in 3d, which added nothing but nausia. We expect the 3d was entirely for the purpose of (a) copying Pina and, relatedly, b) getting funding. But Cunningham's dances are far less spectacular and their presentation here likewise. The 3d only distracts from the movement in all but one Warhol-involved set, especially when edited with 2d archival.

 

  • First half entertaining, second boring. The film progresses at a monotonous pace: one thing happens and then another and then another. No real conflict or tension.


Which is a problem. Because there evidently was plenty of this, but only in reality. The movie, on the other hand, brushes past unconvincingly. No one in the film is given space apart from Cunningham - everyone else speaks to convince the audience how great he is. I wanted to hear from one of his female dancers honestly, in long form, of the darkness of Cunningham. This would help to flesh out his character, give us something to chew on, and organise the film into a narrative. As is, we grew progressively distrusting and disengaged with the Greatest Hits/ Victory Lap tone, before the film ends suddenly with the news that all his dancers left.

  • Ultimately we were left unconvinced that Cunningham (the dancer) was all that interesting. Fashionable certainly, he's attached to the right people, and I'm sure it would be great to be dancing as him, but the just-over-half-full prime-time-at-the-festival cinema was an endless circuit of yawns.

Maybe the reason we were such a good three point shooting team is because we were selective and discerning, because we played inside and out, because we had a coach who was more restrictive than no restrictions at all. We lead the league the lead in fewest free throw attempts. We are shooting 4 more threes per game and are two percentage points less in accuracy. We went from stellar to mediocre and our record more than reflects that. Our offense is a sporadic joke and our defense is worse. Our players have given up on defending their ass off when the other end often amounts to one pass and shot, perimeter passing and jack. It is deflating emotionally to guard for 24 seconds only to shoot the first available 25 footer. Buddy is having a terrible season. He has gone from high efficiency marksmen to indiscriminate jacker who does not get to the line. Buddy is better than this but this coach has enable his regression. Bjelica is shooting from 30 feet before anyone can blink. This is what happens when the coach of the team targets 39 3s per game. This is a green light to shoot yourself in the foot. Fluke looked good when the greatest shooters of all time, Klay and Curry, were casting away. This fanciful idea is not transferrable when the opponent pushes you off the line and you have no counter. Harden and Curry will abuse you when you take away their long ball. Buddy, Barnes and Bjelica are not as versatile. Buddy cannot draw fouls. He cannot consistently create space. Barnes lacks creativity and juke moves. Walton has also failed HB by putting him in place to exploit his strength advantage in low and mid post too infrequently. Do you want to know when the Kings are going to miss and be susceptible in transition? It is easy to anticipate. If the ball does enter in the paint or to be more generous the circle around the free throw line, that is draw and kick, the three point shot is likely off-target and opponent likely overwhelming in transition. I can tell a three point shot is going to go astray about 70-80% of the time before the ball is on its downward arc. It is not rocket science. You cannot be precise when you are indiscriminate. Buddy is a great shooter. Bjelica is a borderline great shooter. Barnes is a good shooter. But shake and bake is not their game. Walton knows this. He's not genius but he's not mentally deficient either. Joerger put restraints on his team. Walton has none. Dead Man is hoisting before he breaks a sweat. Everyone can see the pending clang but the guy in the suit with the dumbfounded look. This guy gets the big bucks is a form of thievery when yours truly could do a better job for free buffet access pre or post game. Before it is too late, though we are likely past the point of no return, I would suggest no more threes unless it is off inside-outside action. Inside outside action requires more low and mid post play with a healthy MB3 and 20 MPG for Harry. The guard penetrator has to get into the paint or the circle around the free throw line which means more Yogi and less to no Corny. The exception to this rule is if a player has made a three within the last 2-3 possessions, then heat check status is granted. I would also switch the green light to red for Marvin and Dead Man. You are not allowed to shoot threes. Just stop until you can meet certain benchmarks in practice. For our better shooters, your green light is switched to yellow unless there is paint penetration first, or we are in transition, or you have made a bomb within 2-3 possessions. We need to be far more selective getting to the rim getting to foul line taking threes out of penetration. This coach has enabled the opposite and it has killed our season. The absence of Marvin as a consistent interior threat has been devastating. The absence of Fox as a drive and disher or finisher has been devastating. The absence of Harry as a mid post threat and painful passer, has been hurtful. The inability of Corny to get into the paint has been conspicuous. He goes nowhere and when he does make a play it is because the opponent dares him or ignores him. The benching of Yogi has hindered our quick hitting to the basket attack. The inclusion of Ariza as a perimeter mannequin has been deleterious. The inability of Buddy to keep his dribble under duress to drive and dish when pushed off the three point line has also hurt. When Harden and Curry are forced off the three point line, an obvious counter to their lethality from deep, they will make you pay with penetration and finish or kick out. Buddy had opportunity to carry us by scoring 25 PPG. He could not do it. Barnes had opportunity to get creative and score 20 PPG without Fox and Bagley and could not do it, abetted by an uncreative coach who did not draw up enough plays for him. Within context of these variables, this coach who enabled habits of one shot and low quality three, perimeter passing and mindless deep hoist. Joerger would not allow it and Joerger was better for this reason. I have to believe Fluke knows better but has allowed his leniency and mellow personality to get the best of him. He has to know the difference between a crappy three and a high quality three, but he has NOT demanded his team settle for nothing less. He has emphasized quantity over quality and the result is another lost season. Walton can still be a good coach. I will be optimistic and give him some benefit of the doubt. I do not jump in with the mob mentality. But we are at a pivotal juncture. If he cannot get his team to play with more passion and purpose in the next 30 days, GTFO and take the GM with you. We have suffered enough, and we know an impotent uninspired and misguided performance when we see it. Once you have lost the team they are unlikely to return. We are near this point. Walton needs to get tough and get real or get the hell off my TV. I am done with this team minus Fox, Marvin and Holmes. Everyone else can take their fraudulence to Timbuktu, this includes Barnes, Bogi and Harry. If you keep making mental and physical lapses your unrealized potential is only that. The Kings will be good someday. That day need not include those incapable and consistently careless. Incompetent uninspired basketball is not something I am interested in any more. I have better ways to spend my time, starting with watching paint dry and grass grow.

Grin And Bern It It isnt often that Joe Manchin emerges as a voice of reason in liberal politics—in fact, Im not sure its ever happened before. Manchins basic m. o. as a Democratic senator from conservative West Virginia is to give Republicans bipartisan cover for a ton of their objectives when they have the votes to advance them anyhow. Because his votes arent usually decisive, he sees them as cost-free means of demonstrating his independence from Democratic leadership; but to the end of exposing Republican extremism, its enormously counterproductive. AND YET, among all elected Democrats sweating the growing likelihood that Bernie Sanders will win the partys presidential nomination, hes surprisingly way way more measured and serene about it than his House counterparts in pro-Trump districts. Hes taking it on the Manchin, if you will. You wont? I understand. This is all top-of-mind at the moment, because Sanders won the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. (You probably heard. He also has more supporters than anyone else in the fractured field, and thus the clearest path to the nomination. Heres what Manchin said when Jake Tapper asked him if hed support Sanders over Donald Trump. Well, wed have to see where we are at that time there. Sanders, I can tell you one thing. Hes got a good heart and he wants to do the right thing. His solution for fixing it might not be palatable and might not be something doable. I will have to see. Who knows? Bernie might change and moderate just a little bit from now to then. Who knows? The truth is that a Sanders victory will look less like a political revolution where the hidden social-democratic character of the American polity rips its shirt off like the Hulk than like a negotiated settlement between conservative Democrats and progressives that pulls the party further to the left than it is today. Or it can look like that, if Democrats in tough districts and states learn to talk like Manchin. His response works on three levels: It draws an implicit contrast between Sanders and Trump on the question of basic human decency that every Democrat in America can eventually cite as a basis for endorsing Sanders; It suggests supporting Sanders for president would not automatically entail endorsing every policy idea Sanders has run on. (Coming from a senator who, in a best-case scenario, will sit near the fulcrum of legislative power, it also conveys a message that the limit of the possible in a Sanders administration wont be set by Sanders alone, but by the kind of senator who voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh) It anticipates that as the nominee, Sanders would pivot to a general election message thats easier for frontline Democrats to attach themselves to. Is this how the party would, in an ideal world, respond to the ascendency of the progressive movement? No it is not. But realistically, the alternative isnt that Democrats from tough states and districts bend the knee and join the revolution; its that they splinter the party and drag Sanders down in panicky desperation to save their jobs at the expense of the party and the country. Before you freak out about this, its worth remembering that the GOP establishment also panicked for months after Trump won the Republican nomination in 2016. When the Access Hollywood tape surfaced, the Republican House Speaker refused to campaign for him, and a bunch of members withdrew their endorsements (only to reissue them right before election day) and despite all that disarray, Trump won. Sanders, by contrast, leads Trump in head-to-head polls, the overwhelming majority of Democratic voters like and admire him, and any tapes that surface will be of him gently brushing off Tom Steyer. But Democratic leadership has been excessively indulgent of the jitters of freshman House members. And many of them have come to view the cautious campaigns they ran in formerly-red suburban districts (amid a historic wave election) as the only possible template for Democratic victory—whether in legislative fights, congressional races, or a state-by-state battle for an electoral college majority. It was this basic fallacy that made House Democrats so reluctant to impeach Trump last year, and which has paralyzed the House in the aftermath of impeachment, as Trump orchestrates an authoritarian takeover of the Justice Department. (Its been an interesting week. But the lesson of impeachment actually exposed the weakness of this kind of thinking. Impeachment polled under 40 percent until Democrats abruptly unified in support of it, at which point it eclipsed 50 percent almost instantly. The public takes its cues from elected leaders, even ones in swing districts, and that includes on the question of whether “controversial” candidates are worthy of mainstream support. In other words, its incredibly important for party leaders to lead from the front, right now, so that we dont wake up after Super Tuesday to a mad Democratic stampede away from the rising leader of the party. Or over him, in a Lion King situation. Ideally were looking at no stampedes. Its true that Manchin may feel more blasé about all this because he wont face voters again for another five years, while all House Democrats will face voters in November. But the best hope for the endangered, Sanders-wary among them is for Trump to lose, and the best way to assure that happens is for the whole party to unite behind the nominee. It doesnt work the other way around. 2. The Culinary In The Coalmine Nevadas 60, 000-member-strong hospitality-workers union, Culinary Workers Union Local 226, has declined to endorse a candidate for the Democratic nomination, ahead of the states caucuses next Saturday. Thats not ultimately super surprising—the union also remained neutral during the last primary, and wasnt expected to back a particular candidate this time until late this week. But I think theres a case to be made that the non-endorsement is a consequence of the tortured health-care debate that has come to define the campaign. The backdrop for all this was a significant public breach between the union and the Sanders campaign over Sanderss Medicare for All plan. Heres a good rundown, but basically: The union opposes Sanderss bill as a threat to the unique health plan its members negotiated for themselves, which might be disrupted if Medicare for All were to become law. Some of Sanderss most vocal supporters took the pushback in characteristic stride, and when 226 went public about the ensuing harassment, all of the candidates in the field, including Sanders, issued statements of support for the union, and promised to work with its leaders to protect their benefits one way or another. Its almost as though the white papers candidates run on and actual legislating are totally different things! In culinary terms, a recipe is not a cake. (Endorse me, 226. Thats why I see this weird hiccup as a microcosm for the health-care conversation that has dominated the primary. Ill have more to say about that in a future newsletter or article, but the short version is: Weve reached the natural endpoint for a year-long health-care debate that was really a debate about different visions of justice and how the party should vie for change within the political system. Unfortunately the candidates largely engaged that debate in terms of budget numbers and policy details, as though presidents could make law by fiat. Dont support the Sanders bill to the letter? Youre a sellout. DO support Sanders bill to the letter? Youre going to raise taxes! It was a bad and self-serving way to go about such an important argument, and now that its seeping into the realm of electioneering—perhaps at the expense of a valuable endorsement—I imagine some candidates wish they could go back and do it the right way. 3. Bringing Down Their Own House As alluded to above, Trump has, with the help of Attorney General Bill Barr, spent the week exercising dictatorial power to shield his cronies from criminal justice, threaten his enemies, and silence witnesses to his crimes by purging the government of “disloyal” civil servants who testified to the impeachment inquiry. His post-impeachment lurch toward authoritarianism was widely predicted, including by House impeachment managers, but that doesnt make it any less alarming. The most alarming thing of all, though, is that House Democrats seem to have fully regressed to the supine, conflict-averse state that defined their pre-impeachment approach to oversight. Four federal prosecutors just resigned from a case Trump commandeered to help his Russia-collusion crony Roger Stone; one of them left the Justice Department altogether; Trump essentially fired the U. S. Attorney who supervised that case; and the only step House Dems have taken in response is to invite Barr to testify at the end of March, nearly two months from now. (Thats after the definitely-not-subpoenaed John Boltons book is scheduled to come out, for those keeping score. A reminder: Republicans hauled then then-FBI Director James Comey up to the Hill two days after he announced hed closed the Clinton-email investigation. Barr probably wouldnt be that cooperative, but other witnesses would, and amid the most serious crisis at DOJ since Richard Nixons presidency, Democrats have made no effort of any kind to secure their testimony. Its an unacceptable abdication, no matter how queasy frontline Democrats are about taking on Trump, but unless they hear that from their voters, they will let Trump seize this ground, and the country might never recover. Side Show Michael Bloomberg, who has already spent several fortunes on his increasingly viable campaign for the Democratic nomination, tried unsuccessfully to suppress a video of a 2015 event where he defended stop and frisk in really racist terms. Also, it turns out he used to blame the 2008 housing and financial crisis on the demise of redlining —a now-illegal discriminatory process by which private lenders and the government made it difficult or impossible for people in “undesirable” neighborhoods to secure loans.
